raag todi(in carnatic)

There is a major misconception concerning the raga todi of Carnatic and the raga todi of Hindustani!
So i want to emphasize that this post is about the raga todi of Carnatic

Raga todi of Carnatic:
The 8th melakarta "hanuma todi"or "jana todi", this belongs to the second chakram(netra chakram). It is a "sarva swara gamaka varika" ragam it is a "shuddhamadhyama" raga and also a sampoorna raaga.According to katapayadi nomenclature: (ha=8,na=0,when reversed gives hanu=08) in the same way, even the term jana todi(ja=8,na=0,jana=08)  is used in dikshitar school. All swaras except madhyamam have gamakas(oscillations) which form a link between ga and dha (the notes which give the main essence of this ragam). The madhayamam is a connection between the purvangam and uttarangam

arohanam:s r g m p d n s
avarohanam: s n d p m g r s

Notes of this raga are shadjamam,shuddha rishabham,shuddha gandharam,shuddha madhyamam,panchamam,shuddha daivatam,kaisiki nishadam.

This raga is equivalent to the "bhairavi that" (Hindustani raga)

This raga has quite a few janya ragas associated with it, like, dhanyasi , punnagavarali.

The most famous compositions in this ragam are "taye yashoda", written by ottukal venkata subbayya
and varnam "eera naapai" by patnam subarhmanya iyyer.

T.N. Rajaratnam Pillai’s renditions of todi in the Nadasvaram,  especially   in the temple festivals of      tanjore,Tiruvi Daimarudur, Tiruvadutturai  and Tiruppanandal,  were really amazing and a marvelous treat to the ears.  He could elaborate todi for hours, all through the night, with boundless imagination and hold the audience spell-bound.  People used to believe that “todi” was his personal family treasure. Once, Smt M.L. Vasantakumari rendered todi, where  Rajaratnam Pillai was present among the audience. At the end of the concert, he congratulated the artist for her exquisite rendition --- a true compliment for MLV from a champion of todi.
Madurai Mani Iyer used to popularize kritis such as koluvamere gada (Tyagaraja) and taye yashoda (Uttukkal Venkata subbayya) in  his concerts. T. N. Seshagopalan is another artist, who can thrill the audience for hours with his exquisite and masterly renditions of todi.

Kadhanu variki,Ninu vina sukhamu,Enduku dayaradura by Thyagaraja swami.
Shri Krishnam Bhajamaanasa and Kamalambike by Muttu swami dikshitar
Karthikeya Gangeya and Thamatham aen swami by papanasanam sivam

This raga heard  in almost every concert.
There is a lot of scope for experimentation in this raga. This raga is basically difficult to perform!

This raga is not for beginner's and the complexity in this raga is because of  it's feature -"samporna vakramu" i.e all the notes of this raga have a touch of  it's preceding note.

Trivia:
There is a town in Southern Italy, named "Todi"..Which has been claimed, by Italians, to be named after the raga todi.

ON RAGA HAMSANANDI

A  janya  of the 53 rd   melakarta Gamanasrama , this is a  panchamavarjiya raga  -- the raga does not have the note Pa. This is why the raga has to be handled very carefully, as accidental touching of Pa, however briefly, will bring in the shades of  Poorvikalyani , another important raga in Carnatic music, which also happens to be a  janya  of  Gamanasrama . As the note Pa, in whichever raga it appears, is an 'anchor' note like  mantra  Sa and  Tara  Sa and acts as a  nyasa swara  it is a stabilizing factor. Hence, the absence of Pa calls for a little alertness in handling this raga. This raga resembles raga  Sohoni  of Hindustani music, which is a  janya  of  Marwa tthat . Hamsanandi  is a  Shadava Shadava  raga as it has six notes both in  arohana  and  avarohana . S R1 G3 M2 D2 N3 S S N3 D2 M2 G3 R1 S The  swaras  are  Shudha...
